The Dugout - Hodgson: Hard work kept West Brom up

West Bromwich Albion boss Roy Hodgson revealed the secret behind him steering the Baggies clear of relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

Hodgson took the job at The Hawthorns in February following the departure of Roberto Di Matteo, and his arrival sparked a six-match unbeaten run which pulled the club away from danger.
A victory over Hodgson's former club Liverpool and draws with Arsenal and Tottenham were all part of a 12-match run that saw the Baggies lose just twice en route to securing a comfortable 11th-placed finish to their first season back in the Premier League.
Hodgson is known for being a great promoter of getting things right on the training pitch, and it was instilling that philosophy into his players which he believes secured West Brom's top-flight survival.
Hodgson told The Dugout: "Results can only come one way, and that's through trying to make certain players understand their job on the field and they are well prepared for the matches ahead.
"You also know, of course, that when you are at the bottom you lose more games than you win, so you've got to make sure that the players have the right attitude and focus.
"But most importantly I find that the preparation for a match, whether you're at the top or the bottom, takes place on the training field. That's where, as a coach, you hope you can have an effect upon the players.
"I think the philosophy of training is simple. You just need to make sure that the players are ready to do what they are paid to do."
