AKP Phnom Penh, June 4, 2011 –The Australian Government has confirmed a new donation of AUD 2 million (approximately US$2.1 million) in funding support for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
AUD 1 million will be given to the national component and AUD 1 million will be given to the international component of the ECCC, according to an ECCC press release.
In a letter to the ECCC, H.E. Ambassador Penny Richards expressed that “Australia recognizes that the ECCC has made significant strides in ending impunity for grave mass crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge, achieving some measure of justice for their victims, and contributing to national reconciliation”.
“I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the continued generosity and support offered by Australia. Such support is imperative in order to ensure that the ECCC can successfully complete it’s mandate, bringing justice to the people of Cambodia and the victims of the Khmer Rouge,” said H.E. Kranh Tony, ECCC Acting Director of the Office of Administration, in a statement.
Australia is a key donor to the ECCC, and it has supported the Court since its inception. With the latest donation, Australia has provided a total of AUD 16.7 million in financial support for the ECCC.
