(CNN) -- Last year's beaten finalist Samantha Stosur charged into the second round on the first day of the French Open Sunday with a straight sets win over Czech Iveta Benesova.
It was a return the scene of her defeat to Francesca Schiavone for the eighth-seeded Australian and she made no mistake with a 6-2 6-3 win to earn a clash with Romanian teenager Simona Halep, who she beat in last year's first round.
"This time last year I played some of the best matches of my career and hopefully I can do that again this week," she told the official French Open website.
Stosur was the highest seeded player in action in a low-key opening to the clay court grand slam, while former world number one Jelena Jankovic saw off Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-3 6-1.

In the men's event, there was disappointment for the fans as former world number one Lleyton Hewitt pulled out of his scheduled first round match against Albert Montanes of Spain.
Hewitt is still recovering from foot surgery back in March and his place was taken by home player Marc Gicquel, who was beaten 6-4 6-4 6-2 by Montanes.
Elsewhere, there was an easy passage for the top men's seed in action, Spain's David Ferrer.
The seventh-ranked star beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3 6-3 6-1 while French favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 17th seed, saw off Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic 6-3 6-2 6-2.
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer open their campaigns Monday with defending champion Rafael Nadal in action Tuesday.
